The Power of His Name

By: Elder Enoch Ofori Jnr

(Sabbath Sermon)

A name is one of the first possessions of man. And it does more than confer a distinguishing title on an individual.

A name often invests a person with character (attributes) and, as appropriate, authority or possession. In this life, a title or designation of power such as ‘president’ can make a huge difference in the lifestyle of an individual.

The situation is no different in the Bible. Names are often symbols of mission, power or authority. For example, in reflection of Abraham’s divinely given role as ‘the father of many nations’, his name was changed from Abram (‘exalted father’)  to Abraham in Genesis 17:5. And many more Biblical examples exist.

As every parent will testify, one of the delights of parenthood is to watch your infant of yesterday grow up and begin to live a more independent life.

You watch with delight as your child takes his first faltering steps, starts to run around and begins to string words together. Before long, he’s jabbering out some coherent sentences.

The baby babble is over, and he has been weaned off the breast milk too. Your child is growing up. From child, he will soon go through his teens and then reach adulthood.

Christ’s Mission of Restoration

 (Sabbath 5 April, 2008)

When Jesus came to earth. He came to meet a world in distress, a world that needed to be healed and restored. For this purpose was He sent by the Father and rightly so. for He had a hand in its creation.

What a poignant spectacle then might have greeted Him as He walked the earth! The world He created so perfect—a blessing—was now full of sick, poor and oppressed people. Everywhere He went, it was curse and pain all round. One legend even has il that Jesus was so saddened by the curse-ravaged state of the world that He never once laughed; He had no reason to.

The world He made to be a blessing was now full of curses with sickness and death reigning supreme. If the earth will again have hope, there was a need for a Restorer.
