Human governments have existed as long as history has been recorded. The power of the state resides in governments, and they are necessary for civil order, public safety, national defence and smooth economic activity.\u00a0\u00a0 Governments are generally considered a force for societal good, although they can be dictatorial and oppressive towards their own citizens.<\/p>\n

In Rom. 13 Paul urges believers to submit to the civil authorities on the grounds that governmental powers are instituted by God:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
